Coating Machine Operator
Hours / Shift Schedule
- A Shift: Monday–Thursday, 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Position Summary
The Coating Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, operating, and monitoring coating machines (R2, R3, R4, R6 & R7) to apply specialized coatings to paper or paperboard rolls. This role ensures consistent coating quality, efficient production flow, and adherence to all safety and quality standards. Operators must monitor machine settings, perform changeovers, troubleshoot issues, and maintain clean production areas while working closely with the machine crew.
This position requires strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, quality control awareness, and the ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate coating machines according to production specifications and coating requirements.
- Monitor production runs for consistency, proper coating thickness, and overall product quality.
- Troubleshoot machine issues, production abnormalities, and coating defects to maintain workflow and product standards.
- Follow and enforce all safety procedures and required PPE standards.
- Continuously check the quality of coated paper for defects such as streaks, color variations, uneven coating, or contamination.
- Adjust machine parameters (speed, tension, coating application settings) to maintain optimal coating performance.
- Clean the coating machine and related components when paper grade or coating requirements change.
- Monitor and update machine settings during grade changes to ensure smooth transitions.
- Identify causes of machine faults and guide corrections to avoid downtime.
- Work alongside the machine crew during setups, roll changes, and full changeovers.
- Ensure high-quality coated rolls come off the machine consistently throughout the shift.
- Join new rolls to maintain continuous coating and converting operations.
- Inspect finished products and document any quality issues discovered during or after production.
- Maintain detailed production logs, including coating formulas, batch numbers, settings, inspection results, and any deviations.
- Keep the coating area clean, organized, and compliant with housekeeping expectations and 5S standards.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to understand machine operation, adjustments, and basic troubleshooting.
- High attention to detail and adherence to quality control standards.
- Basic math skills for coating calculations, machine settings, and production measurements.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work independently when needed.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with tight production requirements.
- Strong teamwork skills to collaborate effectively with the machine crew and support personnel.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods during 12‑hour shifts.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Frequent bending, reaching, climbing steps, and handling machine components.
- Work around moving equipment, coating materials, and heated components (PPE provided).
